Book 0809 presents a unique showcase of emerging talent in design and visual communication and is now available to buy online.
A physical, model World of YCN was built in collaboration with designers and illustrators internationally to sit at the heart of the latest YCN Book.
Now
in it's fifth year, the annual YCN Book celebrates outstanding new
creative work; and includes a colourful array of projects spanning
varied disciplines and media. Personal and self-initated work is shown
alongside commercial and commissioned pieces. The book also showcases
the work to have been Commended as part of the previous year's
YCN Awards, as well as presenting the live creative briefs that form the basis of
the very latest program. The final chapter reveals a 'making of process' this year compiled and designed by
Alex Ostrowski.
Book 0809 was designed and art directed by
HudsonBec. Having conceived the 'World of YCN' as a visual device to relate to the publication's sections; they enlisted
Bryony Birkbeck and
Kristina Grundbergto put together an international team of designers, illustrators and
model makers to duly build the many weird and wonderful elements that
such a world would require.
Contributions came from
Thorbjorn Ankerstjerne (clouds),
Jess Bonham (boat),
Yulia Brodskaya (lily pads and butterfly),
Nick Cobby (beach hut),
Jack Featherstone (russian dolls),
Owen Gildersleeve (greenhouse),
Jean Jullien (mountain),
Jiggery Pokery (castle),
Shaz Madani (aeroplane),
Wendy Marchbanks (rocket and kite),
Hattie Newman (gingerbread house),
Rosy Nicholas (bird cage),
Ciara Phelan (lighthouse),
Elin Svensson (treasure chest),
Adam Tickle (mountain background),
Us Studio (bridge),
Sarah Waters (seahorses), and
Sian Wilson (hotel). To compliment these specific elements; over
600 individual trees were embellished by different contributors to create the World's forest.
Different
parts of the world were assembled to reflect the diverse sections of
the publication - from spectacular mountain ranges to lush underwater
realms. Each scene was photographed at Shoreditch Studios by
Alastair Casey and Jess Bonham, with digital assistance from
Tanya Houghton and retouching by
Russell Kirby.
Book 0809 runs over 264 full colour pages, is printed
on two different paper stocks (by
Rotolito Lombarda in Milan), is perfect bound, measures 240 x 240 mm and weighs 1034 grams.
The publication is distributed across the creative industries, to Art & Design colleges and is available to buy in limited numbers online.
